Portland Weekend Goings-On, October 12th – 14th

These things are happening this weekend. Get out of the house and/or apartment and/or office and do some of them.

(And if you missed Jon Spencer Blues Explosion at Asylum last night, shame on you, son.)

My Picks:

DIRIGIMUS Farewell Show Day Two with God.Damn.Chan., Altered Gee and Contrapposto. Of the event, Rural Ghosts’ Erik Neilson says: “Leif Sherman Curtis and company have devoted the past 8 or so months to not only supporting DIY culture and the local music community in Portland, but also bringing benchmark artists to the area – Greg Ginn of Black Flag, anyone? Dirigimus Cooperative’s days of putting on shows are coming to an end, with only two remaining before they move on to the next stage of their existence as a cooperative label. Come check out something beautiful before it becomes a distant memory.” The show starts at 9:00. [FRIDAY]

5 Broken Cameras (Part of the Palestinian Film Festival) Described as “an extraordinary work of both cinematic and political activism,” 5 Broken Cameras explores non-violent resistance in Bil’in, a West Bank village threatened by encroaching settlements. The film documents the bulldozing of olive trees, the intensification of protest, and loss of lives over the course of 5 years and it tracks the effects on the filmmaker and his family. The screening is followed by discussion and the Festival is presented by Maine Voices for Palestinian Rights. 5 years of turmoil. 7:30 PM, $7, $5 for SPACE Gallery members and students with ID. [SATURDAY]

SALACIOUS Magazine is celebrating its work issue at the Work Launch Party. The queer feminist sex magazine invites you to come to Slainte on October 13th at 9 pm to help them launch their fourth issue. The theme is work, obviously, and so you are encouraged to wear your sexiest work attire while you dance to DJ Che Ros. The event is 18+ with a $3 cover at the door. [SATURDAY]

Also worth considering:

  • Check out the Godzilla Attacks installation at the front window of SPACE Gallery, which required hundreds of hours of work and grants. More information can be found at the SPACE Gallery website. Free! [ONGOING]
  • In Yarmouth, Rosemont Market will feature a free wine tasting on Friday from 4-6:30 pm. [FRIDAY]
  • Mac DeMarco plays at SPACE Gallery with Lantern (“Feral kind of proto-rock, touched by raw blues and avant-garde leanings”) and Whip Hands (“Portland’s grunge revivalists”). Show starts at 8 and costs $10. [FRIDAY]
  • Anna Lombard McGeachey reports that Portland’s League of Extraordinary Women will play at Asylum Saturday night, a lineup that will include Sontiago, Dilly Dilly, Kristina Kentigian, Darien Brahms, Kenya Hall, Annie herself, Amy Allen and Lady Essence. The show will feature 30 minute sets from each performer, some solo acts, some with DJs, some with full bands. [SATURDAY]
